A Few of My Favorite Things

- The First Image is a picture of a koozie that my brother gave me. Back home we compete to see who has the coolest koozie so it is very special to me.

- The second image is a picture of my guitar. This has been my dream guitar ever since I started playing about 6 years ago. It is my most prized possession.

- The third image is a picture of a watch that my Dad gave me last year. I have been eye-balling this watch for years ever since I saw him first wearing it. He surprised me with one day and now I wear it more than he ever did.

The three sculptures visually communicate my own personal memories. These sculptures are reflections of past memories and dreams that I have had.
While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on making something with focal points because I wanted it to catch the eye.
I want to keep exploring with wood. I really love working with this material, because it lasts a long time and it is very hands on. I want to learn more about how creating something from a small idea can help in further courses and certain career paths in the future.
The Topographical Table sculpture was very fun to build. It allowed me to explore with different tools I hadn’t used before. I felt my innovations skills really kicked in with this one. The making of these sculptures really helped me to explore my own mind in order to create sculptures from everyday materials.

Artist Statement:

I designed this box to reflect a sense of discovery and curiosity, but it is also meant to reflect aggression and anger. The box itself is dark, jagged and pieced together maybe to resemble something broken that has been put back together again. Within the box it is bright, it contains items that are personal and give more mystery to the box.

The ideas of discovery, revenge, and adventure are all part of the box, but they aren’t told in a clear story. Discovery happens when someone looks inside or spends time with it. Revenge is more about how the shape of the box makes you feel. Adventure connects everything, showing a journey that can be exciting and confusing. This box is supposed to be interpreted in any way that speaks to the observer. Whether it makes you feel sad, excited or angry.

Notes:
Movie - "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" - Wes Anderson
My process when building this box began with making a sharp design to resemble a shark tooth or a heart. I then began building the walls which was a bit of a challenge considering the walls were rounded. I then hinged the lid on the the base of the box and stained it a dark red. I drilled three Port Holes into one side of the box to let the viewer see inside. Another fun challenge I gave myself was attaching a light to the underside of the lid. I wanted it to be bright inside the box so light would pour out of the windows. I was able to take apart a light I had found and reassemble it into a much smaller design to fit within the box. I then used picture hangers as hooks for my three Items.
